14776 – Etologia ed Evoluzione del Comportamento (6 CFU, Anno 1, Sem I) [Ethology & Evolutionary Behaviour]

Main aim of this module, nested into the course of Evolutionary Zoology, is to provide students basic knowledge of the study of animal behaviour, with particular regard to its evolutionary and ecological drivers and implications. In addition to lectures on theory on the most advanced hypotheses in animal behavioural research, the course  would entail a series of laboratory sessions, both in the computer room and field, during which students will sample real behavioural data. With some examples, students would acquire the capability to turn hypotheses into proper experimental designs. Students would familiarise with software most commonly used for data recording and analysis  and data representation in scientific and general public contexts. Here the course details (in Italian).

02334 – Didattica della Biologia (6 CFU, Anno  2, Sem I) [The Teaching of Biology]

Main aim of this course is to provide students basic pedagogic elements to teach biology  from elementary to high schools. Main learning paths, on different levels and at different scales will help students to  build comprehensive and inclusive teaching methods. The first part of the course will show students the main teaching methods and their context-dependant use. The second part will introduce definitions and concepts of biology, from the cell to the ecosystem, with particular emphasis on evolution, biodiversity and environmental sustainability. 19790 – Metodi Quantitativi in Biologia (3 CFU, Anno  2, Sem II) [Statistics in Biology]

Main aim of this course module, nested into the course of Biodiversity II, is to provide students basic elements to analyse the most common datasets sampled in biology studies. Computer and field sessions will help to illustrate how to design experiments in accordance with the study rationale, which type of statistical tests need to be applied and how to interpret test results. All the data analyses will be conducted by using excel and R Studio software packages. Main data descriptors, frequency distribution, parametric and non-parametric tests to compare datasets, linear regression and simple linear models, are the major topics explained in the context of the course.
